Air New Zealand Launches Direct Christchurch to Rarotonga Service
Today, the Cook Islands welcomes Air New Zealand’s direct Christchurch to Rarotonga service, strengthening connectivity between New Zealand’s South Island and the Cook Islands.
The seasonal service will operate up to three times a week through to October, with flights departing Christchurch every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 3:20 pm and arriving in Rarotonga at 10:05 pm local time. The new route provides South Island travellers with easier access to the Cook Islands, perfectly timed for a winter escape.
Air New Zealand has served the Cook Islands for many years and currently operates daily direct services between Auckland and Rarotonga. Christchurch Airport, New Zealand’s second busiest airport by passenger volume, is considered the main gateway to and from the South Island. Prime Minister Honourable Mark Brown said the service reflects growing demand for the destination and further strengthens Air New Zealand’s long-standing commitment to the Cook Islands.
To support the launch, Christchurch based travel agents are currently visiting the Cook Islands on a familiarisation programme supported by Christchurch Airport, Air New Zealand, and Cook Islands Tourism. Cook Islands Tourism representative Noeline Mateariki said the familiarisation programs ensure that the travel trade is better informed on where and what to do in the Cook Islands when speaking with clients.
Air New Zealand Country Manager for the Cook Islands, Addrienne Hosking-Tinirau said “the Christchurch – Rarotonga route reflects Air New Zealand’s continued commitment to the Cook Islands and its economy. It’s more than just a flight path, it is a reconnection of people, communities, and opportunities”.
The Air New Zealand Rarotonga team will warmly welcome customers & celebrate the arrival of tonight’s inaugural flight by sharing our culture through song & dance.
