The programme supports emerging talent

Ellenoah Oti and Abel Thompson-Papai have officially taken the next step in their tourism careers, signing their agreements under the Te Arata’a o te Pae Turoto Scholarship and Pathway Programme this week.

The programme, a joint initiative between Cook Islands Tourism Corporation, Air New Zealand and Pacific Resort Hotel Group, supports emerging talent through a combination of academic study at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and practical industry experience.

The signing marked more than just a formal commitment. The session also served as a preparation briefing, giving the recipients a clear understanding of what to expect as they transition into student life in Auckland, from academic expectations to living arrangements and the support available throughout their journey.

As part of the day’s programme, the recipients met with Air New Zealand Country Manager, Adrienne Hosking-Tinirau, in an informal meet-and-greet. The discussion provided a chance for the students to share what they are most looking forward to, while gaining insight from Adrienne on stepping into new environments and making the most of the opportunity.

Adrienne Tinirau-Hosking said,

“It’s exciting to see young Cook Islanders stepping into opportunities like this. Moving away to study can feel like a big leap, but it’s also where confidence grows. We’re proud to support their journey and look forward to seeing what they bring back to the industry.”

The two recipients are currently employed with Pacific Resort Hotel Group, one of the programme’s key partners, giving them an existing foundation in the tourism industry as they begin this next phase of development. Their participation reflects a strong connection between industry and education, ensuring that learning remains relevant and grounded in real-world experience.

Cook Islands Tourism Corporation Industry Development Manager, Tina Kae, said the programme is designed to invest in people who will contribute meaningfully to the future of the industry.

“This is about creating a pathway that feels real and achievable for our young people. They’re not just going away to study, they’re building skills, gaining exposure, and staying connected to an industry that needs them.”

Through the programme, recipients will complete a Certificate of Arts at AUT while also undertaking structured industry placements, equipping them with both academic knowledge and practical capability.

The Te Arata’a o te Pae Turoto Scholarship and Pathway Programme continues to reflect a shared commitment from partners to grow local talent and strengthen the Cook Islands tourism workforce for the future.
