Jetstar’s Brisbane to Rarotonga Inaugural Flight Welcomed with a Special Homecoming
The Cook Islands has officially welcomed Jetstar’s inaugural direct flight from Brisbane to Rarotonga, marking another exciting milestone in strengthening tourism, connectivity, and cultural ties between Australia and the Cook Islands.
The new service, operating three times weekly, opens an important gateway from Queensland and further strengthens access for Australian visitors, returning Cook Islanders, and diaspora travelling home. Passengers arriving on the historic first flight were greeted at Rarotonga International Airport with traditional drumming, cultural performances, and the warm island hospitality the Cook Islands is known for.
Prime Minister Hon. Mark Brown described the launch as another important step forward for the nation’s tourism sector and wider economy.
“Jetstar’s Sydney services have already delivered significant benefits for the Cook Islands, and the introduction of three weekly flights from Brisbane further strengthens accessibility for both Australian visitors and our Cook Islands diaspora travelling home,” Prime Minister Brown said.
Australia continues to emerge as a key growth market for the Cook Islands, with visitor arrivals forecast to reach approximately 55,000 in 2026 — representing 28 per cent of total visitor arrivals, compared with around 29,000 visitors in 2019.
Cook Islands Tourism Corporation Chief Executive Officer Karla Eggelton said Brisbane was strategically selected as Jetstar’s second Australian gateway to support the continued growth of the Australian market.
A Proud Cook Islander at the Controls
Adding even greater significance to the inaugural service was the presence of Jetstar First Officer Robert Woonton Jnr, a proud Cook Islander who was on the flight deck as the aircraft touched down in Rarotonga for the very first time.
For Woonton, the flight was far more than another aviation milestone — it was a deeply personal homecoming.
“This time, instead of being a passenger, I’m one of the pilots helping bring people home. As a Cook Islander, that’s a very special feeling and one I’ll never take for granted,” he shared.
Woonton, who has family ties to Manihiki and Penrhyn in the Northern Group, said his love for aviation began growing up near Rarotonga Airport, watching planes fly low over the seawall. Inspired by Cook Islands aviation pioneers who succeeded internationally, he pursued his dream through years of training, determination, and perseverance.
His aviation journey began in 2009, leading to roles with Air Rarotonga, Link Airways, and eventually Jetstar, where he is now based on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Woonton said returning home always brings a special feeling.
“For me, it’s the sense of belonging. Our family and friends are here, our kids love being here, and there’s a warmth in the Cook Islands that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it yourself. Our culture, community, and way of life are unlike anywhere else.”
Cook Islands Tourism Director of Sales & Marketing Noeline Mateariki said Woonton’s story beautifully reflects the emotional connection many Cook Islanders share with their homeland.
“The belonging, and the warmth of our people, truly is the love of our little paradise coming to life and being shared with the world.”
Strengthening Connections Across the Pacific
Jetstar Executive Manager Customer and Digital, Prue McKenzie, said the new direct route gives Australians even more opportunities to experience the Cook Islands.
“Rarotonga is a stunning destination, and Queenslanders have jumped at the chance to reach this island paradise on this new direct service.”
The Brisbane to Rarotonga service now operates every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday, creating greater convenience and accessibility between the two destinations.
The inaugural flight not only celebrates expanded tourism opportunities but also highlights the powerful personal stories and cultural connections that continue to unite the Cook Islands with the wider Pacific community.
